Safety Guide

Essential information for anyone considering an ayahuasca experience. Safety begins long before the ceremony and continues well after.

Preparation

Proper preparation is crucial for a safe ayahuasca experience. This typically includes following a dietary protocol (the "dieta") for 1–2 weeks before ceremony, avoiding certain foods like aged cheeses, cured meats, and fermented products that contain tyramine. Alcohol and recreational drugs should be avoided. Mental preparation through meditation, journaling, and setting clear intentions is equally important.

Contraindications

Ayahuasca has serious contraindications with certain medications and health conditions. SSRIs and other serotonergic medications can cause dangerous serotonin syndrome when combined with ayahuasca. People with heart conditions, psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, or severe anxiety should exercise extreme caution. A complete medical screening by a qualified professional is strongly recommended before participating in any ceremony.

Set & Setting

"Set" refers to your mindset and emotional state going into the experience, while "setting" refers to the physical and social environment. A safe ceremony requires an experienced facilitator, a comfortable and secure physical space, proper screening of participants, medical support available if needed, and a supportive group dynamic. Never participate in a ceremony where you feel unsafe or pressured.

Integration

Integration is the process of making sense of and applying insights from the ayahuasca experience to daily life. This is often considered the most important part of the journey. Recommended integration practices include journaling, working with a therapist or integration coach, gentle physical movement, spending time in nature, and giving yourself adequate time to process before returning to routine activities.
